Conakry & The Grand Mosquee

Historically, Conakry was one of colonial France’s major ports in West Africa. Conakry is the Republic of Guinea’s capital with a population of over 2 million people. The city is divided into five main communes: Kaloum covers downtown, Dixinn runs from Cameroun to Miniere; Ratouma, a sprawling district that includes the Taouyah, Ratoma, Kipe and Kaporo quartiers; Matam, on the south side, contains Coleah and Madina and Matoto is located out by the airport.

The Grand MosqueeAccording to a legend, the name of the city comes from the fusion of the name "Cona", a wine and cheese producer of the Baga people, and the word "nakiri", which means the other bank or side. Attractions in the city include the Guinea National Museum, several markets, Conakry Grand Mosque, the city's nightlife and the nearby Iles de Los. The city is noted for its botanical garden.

Islands de Los

If you have time it is recommended to visit the Islands de Los, off the Kaloum Peninsula some 10km (6 miles) southwest of Conakry, they are easily accessible from Conakry. Good beaches can also be found at the Île de Roume and Île de Kassa, the latter being accessible via a public boat service.
